The Stain Removal Cheat Sheet: What Works on What (and Why)

The golden rules of stain removal

Act fast, blot instead of rubbing, use cold water first, and never put a stained garment in the dryer — heat sets stains permanently. Master those four habits and you have already won half the battle.

Protein stains: blood, sweat, dairy

Cold water and enzyme detergent are your tools. Hot water cooks protein into the fibers — the classic mistake with blood. Soak in cold water, pre-treat with an enzyme formula, wash cold, and check before drying.

Grease and oil

Dish soap or a lipase-enzyme pre-treater breaks down oil. Work it into the stain with a soft brush, let it sit ten minutes, wash in the warmest water the fabric allows. Old grease stains often need two or three rounds — persistence beats scrubbing.

Tannin stains: coffee, tea, wine, juice

Rinse from the back with cold water, then wash with detergent in warm water. Skip natural soap bars — they can set tannins. For dried-in wine or coffee, an oxygen bleach soak overnight works quiet miracles.

Grass, ink and mystery stains

Grass responds to enzyme pre-treaters; ballpoint ink to rubbing alcohol dabbed from the back onto a paper towel. For unknown stains, start with the gentlest option — cold water and detergent — and escalate to oxygen bleach only if needed.

Know when to stop

If three attempts have not moved a stain, a professional cleaner has stronger solvents that home products cannot match. Stopping early protects the fabric for the pros.
